IMMIGRATION MEDICAL EXAMINATION

>IMMIGRATION MEDICAL EXAMINATION

immigration medical examination

We explain step by step what is needed to obtain permanent residency (Green Card) in the United States:

What does the medical process for U.S. residency involve?

  1. Mandatory medical exam
You must undergo an examination with a doctor authorized by the U.S. government.
  • If you are outside the U.S.: the doctor is designated by the embassy or consulate (a “panel” physician).
  • If you are inside the U.S.: it must be a USCIS-authorized Civil Surgeon.

A regular doctor does not qualify if they are not authorized.

  1. What the exam includes

The doctor mainly reviews:

a) Medical history
b) General physical examination
c) Required vaccinations
d) Laboratory tests, such as:

  • Tuberculosis (TB)
  • Syphilis
  • Gonorrhea (in adults)
  • Screening for communicable diseases
  • Basic mental health assessment (only if there is relevant history)

  1. Required vaccines

You must have (or receive) vaccines such as:

  • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
  • Tetanus and diphtheria
  • Polio
  • Hepatitis B
  • Influenza (seasonal)
  • COVID-19 (according to current regulations)
  • If you already have documentation, bring it with you.

  1. Medical form

  • If everything is fine, the process continues normally.
  • If a vaccine is missing, it will be administered or you will be advised how to complete it.
  • Treatable conditions generally do not prevent residency.
  • Severe and uncommon cases may require a waiver.

What issues can cause problems?

These are rare, but include:

  • Untreated active tuberculosis
  • Certain highly contagious diseases
  • Refusal to get vaccinated without an accepted exemption
